Glossary

There are several terms used in the draught-brewing profession that may be unfamiliar to outsiders or new brewers. We have listed those terms below to help with understanding the recipes, their requirements, and their effects.

  • Consumant: the person consuming the draught.
  • Dreaming: any person, object, or location that originates from the Dreaming, where the minds of Wakers go when they sleep.
  • Viscosity: description of the draught's 'thickness' or liquid density.
  • Waking/Waker: any person, object, or location that originates from the Waking realm, often referred to as the mortal plane.

Complexity Rating

Each draught recipe is assigned a complexity rating, which can be thought of as equivalent to a difficulty rating. While these ratings are understood to be subjective interpretations, they are assigned in the interest of providing guidance on the amount of effort required by each recipe, and identifying which draughts can be comfortably undertaken by novices, and which ones may require a more experienced hand. The rating system is laid out below.

  • (C1) Very Low: a very easy recipe having only one or two ingredients, a few steps, and easy measurements. So simple a child could brew it.
  • (C2) Low: an easy recipe that has a few ingredients, a few steps, and easy measurements. Simple enough for a child or a beginner to brew.
  • (C3) Medium-Low: a recipe that may integrate more ingredients, steps, or unusual measurements. No longer simple, but still achievable for novice brewers.
  • (C4) Moderate: a decently complex recipe that should only be attempted by brewers that have some experience under their belt.
  • (C5) Medium-High: a recipe whose ingredient requirements, steps, or process is requires an experienced hand, and is best not attempted by novice brewers.
  • (C6) High: a recipe that is demanding either in ingredient volume or rarity, or demanding in its steps or process. Typically used as training recipes for experienced brewers.
  • (C7) Very High: a recipe that is not made very often, and requires much in terms of time, technique, or ingredients. Can be attempted by experienced brewers, but is typically the province of experts.
  • (C8) Challenging: a recipe whose demands in rare ingredients, process, or technique make it difficult to brew for all but experts, who may do so with regularity.
  • (C9) Expert: a recipe that requires either rare ingredients, specific techniques, considerable time commitment, or specific equipment to successfully brew.
  • (C10) Master: a recipe that utilizes exceedingly rare ingredients, difficult-to-master techniques, an extended time commitment, and specific purpose-built equipment. Bottles of master-level draughts can only be obtained at exceptional expense, and are only occasionally produced by draught brewers that have spent thousands of years honing their craft.

General Notes

  • The effects of all draughts should be assumed to be time-limited, and to wear off anywhere between 2 hours and 2 weeks, unless otherwise indicated by the draught recipe.
