—————————————————————————————-

Dawn had been chosen for this activity numerous times, leading her to ignore the teacher explaining over and over. The aggressive part of her wolf wanted to shout out, “Yes, we all know our opinion will matter, yes we all know about the rules and regulations and maps!” But the yearling wolf, the obedient side of her wolf whined in her ear, “We don’t want to get in trouble and ruin our perfect reputation!” And that triggered a nonstop argument of the first and second, arguing back and forth, back and forth.

She could literally feel her mind zooming out from this little incident, and into the final part of her wolf, the dominant, thoughtful, elite, and powerful one. It was focusing on the message of the Moonstone last night, her sixteenth birthday. The message was still clear in her mind, ‘Dark will rise, Light will fall… Unless, there is a Wolf to save us all. Find a blazing ember, to partner with you on your way, or else all good will crumble, and all bad shall rise, my dear Starlight, bringer of the Moon, successor of my name.’ Although her full name was Dawn Starlight Lupus…

And, as far as she could tell, that was the first time anyone had heard the spirit of the Moonstone’s name. And that was a bad omen. It was bad enough she was the youngest Beta, youngest university student, youngest everything! But if everyone knew that even the Moonstone set her aside from the rest, she would never ever have a chance to rest from getting bombarded by bullies, taunted by older, taller people, and getting criticised by all wolves for being a yearling and three fifths, as a Beta! And it was bad enough one werewolf year was one human decade. She’d be the youngest everything forever and ever and ever!

She sighed deeply, and was just about to daydream about something else, when, “Ms. Lupus! Please answer the question!”

Dawn sighed, having her brain look through her memory until she found the perfect answer, “The slides the presenter would have to make must contain elements of kindness, knowledge, prestigiousness, and excelling features.”

“Correct,” Groaned Ms. Relamus, who could never catch Dawn in the act of daydreaming. “But I still would like you to make slides and present to the orientation students, as you are head girl,” Everybody gasped loudly, not expecting this honour from Ms. Relamus, the prefect department head to give to Dawn, Ms. Relamus’s Least favourite student, who, coincidently was a mastermind, and smartness wasn’t exactly Ms. Relamus’s strong suit; it was more like empathy and emotional welfare. Dawn aced all tests that were thrown her way no matter what, which was why they thought she chose veterinary science as her specialty, with a wide range of professions in the vet industry.

In truth, she chose to be a vet because she loved animals, and She had also taken a small Writing course, and secretly attended Moonlight Sorcery class, for Moon Werewolf sorcerers from yearling to 3 years.

“Anyway…” Ms. Relamus cleared her throat, breaking the awkward silence. “I will be assigning you to your underlings. Gretta, Milly. Freida, Majorie. Dawn, Amber. Soleia, Erin…”

She went on, and on, and on.

Dawn walked down the hall, heading to the Head Girl Room for Year fours. She reasoned thus: If she had a super presentable room, and neat arrangement, she would be a great role model for the students. She sighed glumly as she looked out the snow covered window and sat at her desk. If only humans hadn’t realised werewolves existed back in 2026. Then they would have as good technology as the wolves from many millenniums ago. She could openly use her holos, and many gadgets. But no, the humans decided they needed to build machines to help kill werewolves, though they did no harm to humans, and most of the time, the fake gadgets didn’t even work!

She got to work, preparing a mattress on the floor, and setting it up, taking out the textbooks Ms. Relamus had given her for “Amber”, the girl she would look after. Ugh, the girl probably wouldn’t measure up anyway. And then she would lose another friend. Like how she lost Carol, how she lost Veronica… Better not think about that, it always brought on one of her moods. At least Luna had stayed though, being her friend for four years.

She took out her holo, and began drawing, which always relaxed her.
