Chapter Nine: Abandon Astria

In the icy, fractured expanse of the throne room, Oliver and K.J. stood side by side, their eyes on the frozen figure of the fallen king, encased entirely in a shimmering tomb of ice. K.J. glanced sideways, catching a glimpse of Oliver's stern, almost impenetrable expression. Beneath the façade, however, he sensed a tempest of suppressed emotions—a controlled yet smoldering anger. Gently, K.J. placed a steadying hand on Oliver's forearm. Oliver's gaze softened momentarily, nodding in acknowledgment.

"Your majesty," a deep, resonant voice echoed through the silent hall. They both turned to see Mankoo, the senior mage, bowing respectfully. "This place is no longer safe for you."

"I know," Oliver responded quietly, his eyes lingering on his father one last time.

"You need to head west, to find my brother," Mankoo continued, his tone measured yet urgent.

Oliver's curiosity flickered. "And why should I go west?"

"My brother may be able to  uncover how K.J.'s power can aid you in reclaiming Astria," Mankoo replied, casting a thoughtful glance at K.J. "His abilities... they are what even the gods and goddesses fear."

K.J. looked back at Mankoo, the faint clink of his quiver against his sore back grounding him in the present. Mankoo extended a worn, leather-bound book, its cover etched with intricate gold filigree. With a wave of his hand, he conjured a sturdy wooden table in front of them, setting the ancient tome down with reverence.

Oliver and K.J. stepped forward, examining the pages that held stories and depictions of beings called Auralians. The illustrations showed figures in flowing, opalescent robes, halos hovering above their heads and golden belts fastened at their waists, commanding brilliant beams of light in awe-inspiring displays of power.

"But," Mankoo cautioned, "K.J. may not be entirely Auralian..."

Oliver's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"

Mankoo pointed to an illustration of a radiant woman. "Auralians bear a distinct marking—a compass pointing in four directions, symbolizing the elements, with a sun at its center, representing their mastery over light."

K.J. observed the tattoo on the page, a design both familiar and foreign. His hand instinctively moved to the markings on his own abdomen, but Mankoo continued, flipping to a different section.

The next page revealed darker, more enigmatic figures, clothed in robes as shadowy as the night. In contrast to the Auralians, these figures had tattoos with a crescent moon at the center instead of the sun, surrounded by symbols of night and shadow. "This," Mankoo explained, his voice low, "is the mark of the Umbra. They wield the power of darkness, not in malevolence, but as a counterbalance to light. They are not evil; they serve as the other side of the spectrum, maintaining balance."

Oliver's eyes narrowed as he absorbed Mankoo's words, casting a glance at K.J. for understanding. K.J. slowly lifted his tunic, revealing his tattoo: a complex design with both the sun and crescent moon intertwined, each symbol radiating faint traces of energy.

"His tattoo is neither," Mankoo observed, his voice filled with a reverent caution. "We may have stumbled upon something entirely new, something beyond Auralian or Umbra. This vast island was balanced by only two kingdoms—each embodying Fire or Water, with Ice as an extension of Water's domain. But something is disrupting this delicate balance. Whatever is brewing in Cryostria... it's seeking to tip the scales. K.J. might be the key to restoring order."

Oliver's face tightened, his skepticism clear. "K.J can't carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, Mankoo. And who's to say any of this is true? Auralian and Umbra—they're stories, myths meant for children."

Mankoo's expression remained steady. "Have you seen anyone else, anyone, display the kind of power K.J. did? A mere mortal defending against a goddess—did you see the fear it struck into Shiva herself? There's more to K.J. than even he realizes."

Mankoo's gaze softened as he turned to K.J., his tone shifting with curiosity. "K.J, how did you come here? Where are your mother and father?"

K.J.'s posture shifted, his face withdrawing as painful memories surfaced. Oliver reached out, placing a reassuring hand on K.J.'s arm. "K.J., you don't have to answer that."

But K.J. took a deep breath, steeling himself. He moved closer to the book and turned back to the page on the Auralians, his finger tracing the image of a woman. Her features struck a chord within him—a faint, haunting familiarity.

Mankoo watched K.J. closely, leaning forward with quiet awe. "Does he even remember how he got here?" he murmured, glancing at Oliver, who shook his head.

Ryan's voice suddenly cut through the room. "His mother brought him here about ten years ago. She left him in Astria, and his uncle raised him ever since."

Oliver's eyes narrowed in thought. "Is there any chance... that his mother might still be alive? If she abandoned him, there had to be a reason. She might hold the answers to all of this."

A loud shout shattered the tension in the throne room. "Sir!" A soldier burst through the shattered doorway, gasping for breath. "They're coming..."

Oliver turned, his voice sharpening. "Who's coming?"

The soldier struggled to speak between breaths. "An army... soldiers, in ice armor... too many to count. They march in mist, layered with ice that grows with every step."

Ryan's expression darkened. "She isn't holding back. With Shiva's help, she can summon endless numbers. Your majesty, you need to retreat."

Oliver hesitated, his gaze locked on Ryan. "And what about you?"

Ryan's tone was firm. "Don't worry about me. I can handle myself. Her sights are set on you and K.J. You must go."

For a moment, Oliver's resolve wavered, torn between duty and loyalty. But Ryan's sharp shout pulled him back. "GO! Protect each other!" he added, softer but resolute.

With a final nod, Oliver motioned to K.J. "Let's move," he ordered, leading him out of the throne room toward the war room. They passed the strategy table, its maps scattered in disarray, and stopped behind the King's massive chair. Oliver pushed against it, grunting as it shifted to reveal a hidden hatch beneath. He pulled it open, revealing a ladder that disappeared into a dark abyss below.

"You go first, I'll follow," Oliver said, gesturing toward the ladder.

K.J. climbed down, his hand trailing the rungs as the cold air seeped up from the depths. After a few tense minutes, he touched down on the rocky surface, his breath clouding the frigid air. Above, he heard the hatch scrape shut, followed by the sound of Oliver's boots as he descended the ladder.

In the pitch black, Oliver's voice was barely a whisper. "K.J?"

K.J reached out, placing a hand on Oliver's forearm. The touch was steady, grounding them both. "Stay with me," Oliver murmured, flipping his hand to reveal a small but bright fireball that hovered above his palm, casting a warm glow over the rough-hewn tunnel walls.

The long corridor stretched into the distance, its shadows flickering as the firelight danced. Oliver turned to K.J, a determined gleam in his eyes. "This way," he said softly, leading them forward, the warmth of the fire in his hand their only guide in the vast darkness.

They reached a vast, dark cavern, the air thick with moisture and the walls glistening faintly as Oliver's firelight flickered upward. In the silence, only the soft echo of their steps against the stone was audible. K.J., clutching his bow tightly, kept his left arm poised, ready to grab an arrow in case of any threat lurking in the shadows.

Ahead, a faint glow beckoned them from far down the cavern. But just as they took another step, Oliver halted abruptly, his expression taut as a low, menacing growl rumbled through the space. K.J. froze beside him, tension radiating off his frame.

Oliver raised his hand, sending the fireball upward to cast a broader light. As the room brightened, the fire revealed a massive, slumbering figure in the cavern's center. It was a Drakard—an intimidating creature with the scaled head of a dragon and the muscular, sinewy body of a lizard. Its scales gleamed a dark green, and fiery breath simmered between its sharp, fanged jaws as it stirred to life under the fire's glow.

As the fire from the Drakard's breath illuminated the cavern, its full size became apparent. Towering nearly 30 feet above them, the creature was massive, dwarfing Oliver and K.J. with its sheer scale. Its body was a terrifying fusion of dragon and lizard, covered in rugged, dark green scales that seemed almost armor-like. Muscles rippled beneath its thick hide, and its head, adorned with jagged, spiraling horns, extended toward them with a keen, predatory gaze. Each step it took sent shockwaves through the ground, amplifying its dominance over the space.

The Drakard's maw opened wide, exposing rows of razor-sharp teeth that glistened in the firelight as it unleashed another roar, filling the cavern with a bone-rattling vibration that echoed off every surface. The sheer force of its roar reverberated through Oliver and K.J.'s bodies, intensifying the primal urge to run.

Oliver shouted, "Run!" shoving K.J. to the opposite side. As the Drakard lunged, its massive head crashed into the cavern wall, narrowly missing Oliver by inches. The creature's eyes, burning with fury, tracked them with deadly focus, and it bared its teeth again, preparing for another strike.

Ducking, Oliver rolled down a jagged path of rocky steps, with K.J. close behind, leaping down the incline. The Drakard's tail swung, crashing into the stone beside them, sending shards and dust into the air. They scrambled down the uneven terrain, barely avoiding the massive creature's attacks. Each movement of the Drakard's limbs left fractures in the cavern floor, and its tail whipped around, splintering boulders and sending them crashing into the walls as it relentlessly pursued them through the cavern's depths.

Drakard's massive tail whipped through the air, striking toward K.J.'s spot with brutal force. The ground cracked beneath K.J. as he narrowly leaped over the tail, rolling upon landing. At the same moment, Drakard reared its head back, preparing to unleash a torrent of fire directly at Oliver.

Oliver braced himself, eyes flashing as he twisted his stance. As the Drakard's fiery breath surged toward him, Oliver threw his hands up, drawing the flames into a spiraling vortex, harnessing its heat and intensity. With a fluid, spinning motion, he redirected the gathered fire, hurling a blazing fireball straight at the Drakard's vulnerable neck. The creature's roar filled the cavern as the flames struck, its scales glowing faintly under the heat, but its hide remained nearly unscathed.

K.J. landed from his roll, swiftly notching an arrow. His eyes narrowed in concentration, tracking the creature's movements. As Drakard turned to face Oliver, K.J. aimed and released an arrow, striking the beast's left eye with precise accuracy. The Drakard bellowed, its shriek reverberating through the cavern in a haunting wail. The creature thrashed, blindly swinging its massive head in pain, while fiery embers flew from its maw in scattered, uncontrolled bursts.

With a swift motion, K.J. drew another arrow and released it at the Drakard's right eye. The arrow struck true, and the Drakard's agonized screech grew deafening, its huge form writhing as it slammed its head against the cavern walls in a panic, scales glinting under the firelight.

"Damn!" Oliver yelled, both in awe and urgency. He grabbed K.J.'s arm, yanking him forward. "We need to run—now!" They sprinted, hearts pounding, toward the cavern's exit, where the light grew larger with every step. The faint sound of rushing water met their ears, Silvervein River's roar a beacon of hope in the darkness.

The Drakard, still blinded but fueled by fury, regained enough control to let out one final, desperate blast of fire. The fiery breath surged down the tunnel, gaining on them as they ran. Just as the inferno closed in, Oliver and K.J. reached the edge of the cave. Oliver jumped first, landing just shy of the riverbank. But the blast struck behind K.J., propelling him with a shockwave, sending him tumbling through the air and plunging directly into the rushing waters of Silvervein.

"K.J.!" Oliver shouted, watching as K.J.'s form vanished beneath the turbulent waves.

K.J. was immediately engulfed in the surging river, his limbs flailing as the current pulled him under and tossed him without mercy. He fought to stay afloat, but his movements were frantic, uncoordinated—he had never learned to swim, and now, in the chaos, his instincts took over, fighting the water's grip in a desperate struggle. The river had no mercy, its icy embrace dragging him down and hurling him against sharp rocks hidden below the surface, leaving his already battered back searing with fresh pain.

Each time he managed to break the surface for a momentary gasp, another wave would slam into him, filling his lungs with icy water and cutting off his breath. His body spun and rolled with the water, helplessly buffeted against the jagged rock faces lining the river, each impact worsening his wounds and robbing him of strength.

K.J. fought against the crushing force of the river, his lungs burning as he thrashed in the freezing water. Each time he tried to break the surface, the river's icy grip yanked him back down, dragging him over jagged rocks that scraped his back and sides. His muscles screamed from the strain, and he felt his strength waning with every passing moment, the roar of the water filling his ears as his vision blurred. Panic clawed at him as he tried to reach for anything to steady himself, but the river tossed him like a rag doll, slamming him into more rocks as he spiraled helplessly.

As he tumbled in the rushing torrent, his arms and legs felt heavy, his muscles aching from the relentless thrashing. His vision blurred, dark spots dancing before his eyes as the world tilted and spun.

Suddenly, a strong, warm arm wrapped around his torso, anchoring him against the current. He felt himself pulled tight against Oliver's chest, his head resting on Oliver's shoulder as his friend battled the fierce currents with powerful strokes. Oliver held on with unwavering determination, his arm gripping K.J. firmly as he kicked hard, pushing against the water's relentless pull. K.J. could feel Oliver's chest heaving with each labored breath, his grip tightening even further as the river threatened to tear them apart.

Oliver's strokes grew more forceful, propelling them inch by inch toward the bank. Every surge forward was hard-won, each movement a testament to Oliver's sheer willpower. Finally, with a final, desperate lunge, Oliver reached the riverbank, dragging K.J. onto solid ground. Exhausted and drenched, he carefully lifted K.J.'s limp form and scanned the area, searching for any shelt

Every muscle ached from the battle with the river, and the bitter cold of their soaked clothes clung to them both. But he knew K.J. needed warmth and shelter, so he hoisted him up again, draping K.J.'s arm over his shoulder, supporting his unconscious weight. His steps were heavy, each one a test of endurance, but he kept moving, his gaze scanning the landscape.

A short distance from the river, Oliver spotted a narrow opening in the rocky cliffside. He quickly approached, finding a small, hidden cavern—a shelter just large enough for two people to take refuge. The entrance was sheltered by boulders and the surrounding trees, obscuring it from the outside.

Inside, the cavern was surprisingly dry and slightly warmer, the rocky walls smooth and untouched. The floor, covered in a thin layer of sand, was soft enough to lay K.J. down without adding to his injuries. Oliver gently lowered him onto the sandy floor, his movements careful and tender as he positioned K.J. on his side.

He noticed the cuts and tears in K.J.'s tunic, remnants of the river's assault, and gently brushed damp strands of hair from K.J.'s face. The bruising and scratches looked worse in the cavern's dim light, but at least they were away from the river and the dangers behind them. Oliver took a deep breath, fatigue settling over him, but he remained alert, resolute, watching over K.J. as he rested, determined to protect him in this hidden sanctuary.

With trembling fingers, Oliver gingerly removed his clothes, the chill in the air causing goosebumps to rise on his skin. As he stood naked, his member swung freely and his butt tightened with each passing second, the cold air nipping at his exposed flesh.

Beside him, mist fell from the nearby cliff, adding to the dampness in the air. The moisture clung to their skin, a constant reminder of the treacherous conditions they were facing.

Sensing K.J's violent shaking, Oliver rushed over to him, determined to keep him warm. "K.J, stay with me," he urged as he wrapped his arms around him. But even with the added warmth of Oliver's embrace, K.J's body continued to shiver and grow weaker.

Realizing that their wet clothing was only making matters worse, Oliver quickly stripped them off and laid them aside. He couldn't help but admire K.J's slender yet toned body, noticing how well endowed he was. Both now completely naked and cold, Oliver held K.J close to his chest, the fire within him radiating outward and warming them both.

As they sat on the cold, damp sand, Oliver could feel the gritty surface pressing uncomfortably against his bare skin, the chill of the cavern air biting against his exposed body. Shifting carefully, he adjusted his weight, easing himself and K.J. toward the smooth surface of a nearby rock wall. With his back pressed firmly against it, the solidity brought some relief from the dampness beneath them, providing a stable surface to lean on as he wrapped his arms more securely around K.J.

The warmth of their skin met the radiant glow of the fireball Oliver had conjured in the center of the cavern, hovering above the sand and casting a gentle light across the rocky walls. The heat enveloped them, creating a snug refuge that contrasted with the icy mist falling outside. As they huddled together, the steady warmth of their bodies and the crackling fire transformed the cold, desolate cavern into a small sanctuary—a place where, for the moment, they could rest and regain their strength.

As K.J.'s shivering finally eased, his breathing steadying, Oliver noticed his eyes slowly opening, hazy yet focused. Gently, Oliver shifted him closer, lifting K.J. so that their bodies pressed together, warmth radiating between them. K.J., instinctively, curled further into Oliver's embrace, seeking out the heat that emanated from his bare chest. His head found a place just below Oliver's collarbone, the soft skin brushing against Oliver's heartbeat—a steady, reassuring rhythm in the cold, empty cavern.

In that quiet moment, both found an unspoken comfort in each other's presence, a rare solace that pushed back against the raw chill surrounding them. The soft, even sounds of their breathing interwove with the gentle crackling of the fire, creating a subtle melody that filled the cavern, echoing against the rocky walls. Amid the encroaching shadows and the distant howls of the wind, this simple harmony became a sanctuary, a reminder that in the midst of chaos and loss, they weren't alone.
