Suadana immediately ran forward "Get every guard in the area up on that wall. I need to get up on the wall to asses what we are up against. Send a messenger to the fire brigade and have them on standby. Getoaresh, your with me, We're gonna need your shields."
"Yes mam!" Getoaresh said. "You two. Go back to the cart, this is no place for spellbinders. Abidyn take your brother by the hand and drag him if you have to. He will try to sneak away. Don't let him." He jogged away to catch up with the mayor, tapping her on the shoulder, mists forming around her. Kresh could see the gate house covered in mists, and its mages where regularly strengthening its shields. Already? That fast? There is two big metal... grates... in front of the gate.
"Come on Kresh. If we can see shield mist even after two portcullises, that's a big attack, and we've seen magic. I rather not get hit by stray spells." Abidyn said as he grabbed Kresh's hand and dragged him back towards the cart.
"Brother." Kresh shuddered as he remembered poor Luanart before he... Kresh had to look away. "Do you think the city is under attack by people who hate our farmlands?"
"No. I fear something far worse. If it was people where are our terms of surrender, uhhh, why haven't they told us to give up and let them in? Taking the great Verenoa Nica most lucrative farmlands would be an amazing political statement. Not to mention having the land and people to work could feed a major army. They could even ransom us back. But, we've heard nothing. Just a surprise attack deep Within the farmland walls." Abidyn said.
"You never know mother could have let them in already."
"And they attack a gatehouse after getting through the other walls? It would have been better to just demand us to do the same. Besides, mom would never do that."
An unwanted thought came to Kresh. Ur's could break the walls down. A chill ran down his spine. Slimes! The pictures in the books he had read, how they where described, they have always been terrifying. Mother, please, please, be okay. Kresh took a deep breath, he was going to see this with his own eyes. That thought dropped his heart into his stomach, but he needed to do this. He knew where the secret postern gate onto the wall was. How could he get away from his brother? His grip was to tight, and after what father said. No, even without him saying anything. Abidyn was expecting him to try something.
They could hear the whistle of the fire spells behind them hitting the buildings around the walls. A sudden loud thud suddenly range out from the gatehouse. Shocked, both of them to turned around. Again, almost load enough to hurt his ears. Kresh could see Shield mist gathering. More guards poured out of the gatehouse to strengthen the shielding.
"No! That've..." Abidyn said, face went pale.
"Brother?"
"I know that sound, to think those have been brought here!"
Kresh could feel his brothers hands trembling. And his grip, he had simply started to pin Kresh's hand to his leg. Sorry Abidyn! Kresh slipped away from his brother and quietly sprinted down an alleyway towards the postern.
It took Abidyn a second to recognize his flight. "Kresh no!" He started to chase."Please! You could easily be killed! I know you want to see whats out there, and I promise to show you, just, just not here! It's so dangerous! Kresh!"
Kresh turned a corner, knowing a way to lose Abidyn. Quickly turning into an alleyway that was easy to sprint past. He could hear his brother run past it, stop, and then sprint back to the ally. "Kresh!" He could hear his desperation, but it was to late. Kresh turned into another alleyway, then another, and another.
"Oh. Young master, where are you running to." He heard someone say in the distance.
"Please, you have to help me find my brother. He's trying to get onto the wall!"
"What?! Calm down! There is no way the guards will let a spellbinder onto the wall."
"You don't understand! He..." Kresh could no longer hear them as he got further and further away. He hoped his brother didn't know where he was going, or whoever he was talking to wouldn't immediately figure out what he was up to. Please getting distracted by my frantic brother. This is so bad. I just, I just need to know. Sorry! Sorry! He made his way into the gatehouse.
As he made his way up the tower, he was impressed with how easy it was to miss the door in or out of the tower. Kresh could hear someone leaving the tower as he ascended the stairs, and thought he could hear guards higher up in the tower.
Thankfully it's fairly dark area. He started to try the dark magic he had been disappointed with earlier. It was surprisingly useful. Drawing darkness around him as he reached the same floor of the wall. He searched the floor nervous to find people in the room. He breathed a sigh of relief, no one was here. He'd have to be quiet though, there where absolutely guards on the next floor. How was he gonna manage not being seen by them? He quietly made his way to the door. He pushed it, praying it wouldn't make any noise, thankfully nothing. He wished he could see the ground from where he was at. Kresh slipped out the door, Hoping his little extra dark spot would be missed, moving a little bit behind the tower. He hid behind those cut out things on the wall.
So far so good. He peaked out towards the gate, and his heart sunk. He had no idea how many slimes there where. It almost seemed like a lake. He could barely make them out them individually. He watched as it they created a fire storm that made it hard to see until they condensed their spell. Somehow the fire moved back and was flung at the walls. So that's what it looked like! Kresh had read they could cast magic without a pointed focus, but he was blown away.
It was hard to see the arrows and bolts sticking out of the slimes, it didn't seem to do anything. He found one that looked like a pin cushion, and out of no where, it start to... melt? Did it die!? Fire may have been more effective? When hit the slimes they would just smoke a little. But, other than that, everything just made them giggle a little. These things where so creepy!
Kresh looked the other direction and his eyes went wide. The nearby gazing land was being swarmed by monsters. He focused on a group of the small and sickly, wargs, surround a poor bovine. Fighting desperately, swinging its horns side to side, skewering one warg. Then rushing forward, ramming into another. One slipped around to its back side, but was kicked as the bovine reared, sending it flying. However a warg on the other side had dodged, lunging forward, sinking its teath into its flank before being flung off. Another warg took advantage of the chaos to bury its fangs into the bovines side. The bovine dropping down hard, rolling over, and crushing that warg. Struggling, it tried rise up, but could not fully stand. The wargs venom must be setting in. As another warg closed in, it got to close, and the bovine bit through its leg. Kresh was so glad he wasn't up close to see this. The warg crumpled, and the bovine stomped on it. But the bovine was slowing. It frantically swung it head at any warg that got close, But they kept closing in. Kresh couldn't watch this anymore.
He looked to the barn and could see other farm animals fleeing, but the wargs started to enter into the building, and where cutting every animal off. He could hear the screeches of the pigsys and other animals from the barn. The animal he could see where trying to fight off the wargs. A group of meeker animals gathering around the pigsys. Which had done an admirable job fighting. Some bovines where ramming heads together with a swarm of bulls. But they where badly outnumber, and the cows started ramming the bovines in their sides and flanks.
Kresh couldn't watch anymore poor animals be slaughtered! His thoughts on the people on the farmlands, Hoping that anyone caught by this horde of monsters gave back what was given, and then some. Feeling sick, and his eyes starting to sting, he recognized exactly what Abidyn had meant. Taking in a deep breath, one more thing to do. Burn into his very soul just how disgusting the Ur' can and will be. Keeping his darkness around him, he sprinted down low towards the gatehouse.
Kresh arrived into chaos, He could see the guardsmen drawing back war bows stepping out and firing out of the narrow window. Others where some sort of crank to ready crossbows, the ones that had their crossbows loaded would step out, and pause to pick a target. One took a fire to the face as soon as he stepped out. A nearby shield magician quickly pulling him back as a healer helped drag the man further back. The heavily armored guardswomen condensed their firestorms, flinging spells out the window. Kresh noticed they had either a small sword, or a long narrow and pointy sword. Even the mayor was busy, knife in hand, flinging fire down a metal grate over a hole in the floor.
Kresh stepped over to see down and his stomach twisted. He saw a chimera. This one had the head of a bull, body of a bear, and a giant cougars tail. It massive body being peppered by arrows, bolts, fire, and even lighting, He could see the damage it had done to the first, what did Abidyn say? portcullis? The mayor landed a fire spell directly into the eye, and as it staggered and slowed a guardsman was able to fire a crossbow bolt into the wound, and the chimera collapsed to ground.
"Kreshjsir!" Kresh jumped and quickly looked at his fathers furious face "How did you even get up here!?" His father with spear in hand, was tapping people as he passed them shield mist forming around them. Grabbing a shield magician by the arm, and pulling him towards Kresh. "Reinforce the gatehouse, and take my son with you as you. Kreshjsir, this isn't over, and we will be having a conversation about this later! Where is your brother?"
Kresh knew this was going to happen, but his mouth was to dry to say anything. Geto paused, and grumbled something to himself. He caught another shield magician. "Change of orders, one of you take this son of mine back the way he came. That tower will likely need more shield mages at this point. Keep him safe. Kreshjsir, you've volunteered to be messenger. We are hurting here, and you are going to get us more people. The orders are to send anyone they can spare to us. Any captain or lieutenant will recognize you. They shouldn't be under attack, so you should be reletively safe."
Geto shook his head "To think its come to this." He looked at the second magician "Find my other son, Abidyn, I'm going to hazard a guess and say he's waiting below this gatehouse. Have him do the same. Kreshjsir, you meet up with your brother on the other side, and you stay with him until I or someone comes to get you! make sure Abidyn runs along the wall, there are monsters over there to run safely on the wall." Glancing back at first magician. "You might need to go down that tower and see if my son is there. That is all."
Kresh turn and started to leave and felt his father hit his bottom with his spear, shield mist forming around him. He rubbed his behind, that kinda hurt, but he supposed he deserved that. The magician picked Kresh up and sprinted out the door toward the tower. Kresh could only barely make out his face, through his helmet. A mix of concentration, fear, and probably frustration. They made it into the other tower without anything happening. As they entered, there was a group of towns people.
An important looking woman narrowed her eyes at them. "I see you found our wayward spellbinder. I can take him, we sent his brother with another group to the gatehouse in hopes of finding him."
"Good to hear mam. You should check above and see if they need help. My task is to make sure this one is safe enough to be able to head to other towers and gatehouses. Then come back and reinforce this tower." The magician said.
Her is widened "It's that bad that Getoaresh would send his youngest son as a messenger!?"
"Both sons, mam."
She pinched her nose "Right, Lets just get right to it then."
"By your leave mam?" She gave him a not, and they took off. Kresh didn't recognize the women, but suspected she was a high ranking monster hunter. The magician carried him for a bit longer. He set Kresh down, putting his body between him and the wall. "Alright young spellbinder, this is where I leave you. Use that shadow magic I saw you using earlier. You probably wont need it for much longer. Get there as fast as you can, and be safe, your parents will tear my head off if something where to happen to you." He turned around and sprinted back the way they had come.
Kresh could see the park they had gone to. He was happy those cuties where on the safe side of the wall. Taking a quick breath, he started running to the other gatehouse. Only seeing wargs out this far, but less and less of them the further he ran.
As He came upon the next tower, it was starting to get darker. Kresh had stopped using magic and could hear the guards in the tower shout out at his approach. Rushing through the door he was quickly stopped "I... I need... to talk to the lieutenant."
"Kreshjsir!? Why are you here? Your father would kill you if he knew you where here. Why do you need to talk to me?" The man said.
"He has an order. He asked me to tell you to send more guards. The farmlands are being attacked. By monsters. They're within the walls. I need to continue onto and get more guards." Kresh said still slightly out of breath.
"What! They've breached the walls?" Kresh could see his worry building. He called another guard over. "Alright, spread the word, we are going to leave a skeleton crew in this tower, and We will be leaving in ten minutes. Also have someone bring something to drink for Kreshjsir. Kreshjsir, you mentioned you need to continue to the other gatehouses and towers?"
Someone brought him some water, and he drained it. "Yes, he said we are in trouble, and there are so many slimes out there, they look like a lake. Also chimera, and bulls, and wargs. I don't know if there are other monsters though. They where attacking the gates, and the animals, and the guards." Kresh said in a rush.
"Okay, okay I get it." The man sighed. He patted Kresh on the shoulder. "We will help your father and this city. Take all the time you need to catch your breath, and be careful when you leave. We haven't seen any monsters yet, but a city wall is no place for a spellbinder by himself."
Kresh collected himself. "Thank you sir." Kresh handed him the cup, and after a nod, he took off to the next gatehouse. By the time he came up to the gatehouse it had fully become summers twilight. The gatehouse going quite similar to the previous tower as he told the captain his fathers orders. "Kreshjsir, have some food and water. It's time to wait before you go. I can see how tired you are." The captain said.
"But..."
"No buts, and I'm sending a few guards with you when you do leave." She insisted.
"My father said he wanted more people, I think he would rather you send more people to him! There where so many slimes!" Kresh said stubbornly.
She stared at him for a time "Alright," She reached forward and ruffled his hair. "Your a good kid, and you've handled yourself very well."
Kresh was given some sort of dried meat, fruit, and some really hard bread. Is this what soldiers eat? He supposed they'd eat this only when needing to stay on the wall. Although, he kinda liked them. It could get boring if he had to much, he wondered if he could get his father to keep some of it at home. That could be really good. What would mother say? She does seem to get a little mad at him and Abidyn for eating so much.
"Kreshjsir, we are leaving and headed into town. I think more help from town will be better than a quicker troop march. Make sure to let the next group of guards you visit know we are spreading out to gather people from this side of town. Ask them to do the same. Be safe." The captain said as she descended downwards.
Kresh watched them leave, only staying for a little longer. He wasn't sure where to set the dishes down, so he put them between the door and window. Hope no one steps on that. Then set out to the next tower, when he arrived it was starting to get dark. He relayed his message to the lieutenant, and after a short break, moved on. This messenger thing is kinda nice, going from place to place, talking to people. Maybe he could do this, his father did ask what he wanted to do when he grew up. His thoughts grew dark, but would the Ur' sit back and let humans be? He doubted that. Not after what he had seen earlier.
It was pretty dark when he got to the the gatehouse, and Kresh was starting to get really tired. He pushed open the door. "Abidyn?"
His brother turned in surprise, as soon as he saw kresh he sprinted over. Abidyn and gave him a crushing hug. "How dare you do that to me! Do you have any idea how worried I was about you?! With everything happening!" Kresh could hear his brothers shaky voice, and started to tear up as well. "I had to help poor Luanart's soul, and other guards souls move past their confusion at their... deaths. All wile you are gallivanting on the wall. Imagine my surprise when a guard shows up, tells me to deliver a message to the towers and gatehouses along the wall. Oh, and make sure to stay off the wall because it's not safe on the wall. Does he say anything about you or dad? No he Sprints back up. At least the horrible banging had stopped. I get to the tower, go all the way up, see a sea monsters and slime. Have to go back down because it's to dangerous there as well. Oh what could be happening to my family? My mother is... probably dead, I hope dad and Kresh are okay. Well lets just keep running. Thankfully the gatehouse is only has a small amount of monsters to deal with. At least there's that. I keep going, and I'm alone in my thoughts, nothing to distract me. Tower two, uneventful. Second gatehouse, They force me to wait and eat. It's to dangerous to be on the wall at night they say. We need to have someone go with you to the next tower, Wait here. And then I'm alone again."
They where both in tears at this point. "I'm sorry, I, I'm just sorry. I'm here now." Kresh said quietly. They just cried into each others shoulders for a little wile, exhaustion settling in for both of them. After calming down Kresh struggle to keep his eye open. No one had come to help his brother yet, and he needed to keep awake. Abidyn needs someone with him right now, and honestly, needed to be with someone as well.
Off in the distance, out around the area Kresh had just come from, some sort of firework went off. A short time later, way outside the city, Another firework bloomed. The firework was a little small looking. "Brother, what does that mean?" Abidyn stood up, a look of relief on his face.
"The first was the city signaling that we need help. They normally would have done that a few times throughout the night. Finally some luck though, uncle Nevin is close, and he will have troops with him to help. Hmmmm, I think he's kinda far away though. Maybe a few hours away, at least to get troops into the city support dad." Abidyn said.
"Lord Abidyn... and Kreshjsir! We've come to escort you." A guard said coming up the stairs.
"No need, my brother seems to have gone around the other side of the wall as a messenger too. Did you see the fireworks?" Abidyn said.
"Fireworks? Did we set off multiple?"
Abidyn grinned. "No, Uncle Nevin, uhhh. Lord Mentanne answered with his own fireworks. I bet they're a few hours out."
"That's a relief, we didn't see either. Time to get you two somewhere safe."
"Isn't is really safe here, We are far away from the monster horde, in a heavily defended gatehouse. And there is beds here. Or at least that's what my father told me." Kresh said.
"Haha, not a bad idea young spellbinder. Though, they're no beds. I can get you into a pallet, you honestly look like your about to collapse where your standing. Come, this way." He led them upstairs into a room with, what Kresh assumed, where pallets. They didn't look very comfortable. "We will keep watch, both of you get some rest."
After the guardsman headed higher up the tower. Kresh watched Abidyn clime onto a pallet. He gestured for Kresh to come over, and then closed his eyes. He didn't need any more encouragement, He climmed up, and quickly fell asleep.
These first parts are here for you to enjoy. Please consider helping fund me on my patreon. I always deeply appreciate anything you give me, even if that's something as simple as view. I will try to get out a chapter When I am able.
